The Event
Every year on the first night of Chanukah, thousands of people gather on the National Mall in Washington, DC. They come to watch the lighting of one of the world's largest menorahs. Families bundle up. Friends meet under the night sky. The crowd stretches across the open space near some of America's most famous landmarks.
This isn't a small neighborhood gathering. It's a major public celebration that draws visitors from across the region. And when that many people come together in one place, they need clean, accessible restrooms.
For several years now, Light It Up – Rent To Go has been the team behind the restroom trailers at this event. We've learned what it takes to serve a large crowd in one of the most high-profile locations in the country.
The Challenge
Public events on the National Mall come with unique pressures. Security is tight. Timing windows are narrow. And the logistics have to be perfect.
This particular year brought an extra layer of difficulty: extreme cold.
Wind chill dropped to around 2°F. That kind of cold doesn't just make people uncomfortable. It threatens equipment. Water lines can freeze. Generators work harder. Heating systems get pushed to their limits. And crews have to stay alert and effective for hours in conditions that would send most people indoors.
On top of the weather, all restroom logistics had to be executed at a single, high-security location: the National Chanukah Menorah on the Ellipse at the White House.
The event organizers trusted us to handle all of it. And we didn’t let them down.
Restroom Trailers & Equipment Deployed
We brought everything needed to keep guests comfortable and lines moving — even in brutal conditions.
Restroom Trailers
We staged heated restroom trailers for events, fully enclosed with flushing toilets, running water, and bright interior lighting.Guests step inside and escape the cold for a moment. The trailers stay warm even when temperatures outside are dangerous.
Generators
Power is everything at a winter event. Our generators kept the heating systems running, the lights on, and the water flowing. We brought backup capacity so a single equipment issue wouldn't shut us down.
Light Towers
Safety matters when thousands of people are walking around in the dark. Our light towers illuminated the restroom areas so guests could find their way easily. They also helped our crew work efficiently during overnight setup and teardown.
Heating Systems
We ran dedicated heating systems to protect both the guests and the equipment. Heated interiors kept visitors comfortable. Winterized water lines prevented freezing. Heat tape and insulation protected vulnerable connections.
On-Site Technicians
Equipment alone isn't enough. We had on-site techs stationed at both locations throughout the event. They monitored restroom conditions, restocked supplies, managed pumping schedules, and handled any issues before they became problems.

The Team
This job required serious manpower.
8 trucks rolled into Washington, DC carrying trailers, generators, light towers, heating equipment, and supplies.
8 drivers stayed on site for the duration. They weren't just delivery drivers — they were trained technicians who could troubleshoot equipment, manage logistics, and adapt to changing conditions.
Our crew arrived the night before the event. That gave us time to meet with security, position equipment in approved staging areas, and test every system before the crowds arrived. By the time the sun came up on event day, we were ready.
From arrival to final teardown, our team worked more than 30 continuous hours. That's not a typo. Thirty-plus hours on site, in freezing temperatures, keeping everything running smoothly.
Timeline & Public Event Restroom Logistics
Here's how the job unfolded:
Our overnight restroom trailer setup began after dark in Washington, DC.
Our convoy arrived in Washington, DC after dark. We met with event security to confirm staging locations and access routes. The National Mall has strict rules about where vehicles can go and when. We had to position all eight trucks, unload equipment, and set up trailers within a tight window.
Crews tested generators, fired up heating systems, and checked every water line. We wrapped vulnerable connections with heat tape and insulation. By the time we finished setup, temperatures had already dropped below freezing.
Event Morning
Pre-dawn start. We powered up generators and began heating the trailers well before the first guests arrived. Warm interiors take time to reach comfortable temperatures when it's 2°F outside. We wanted guests to feel the difference the moment they stepped inside.
Our team did final walkthroughs of both sites. We checked soap dispensers, paper towel supplies, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer. Everything had to be fully stocked before the crowds showed up.
During the Event
Once the celebration began, our crew stayed in constant motion.
We ran live checks every 20–30 minutes at both locations. Technicians walked through each trailer, inspected conditions, and restocked supplies as needed. High-traffic events burn through paper products fast. We stayed ahead of it.
Pumping schedules kept tanks from reaching capacity. Nothing ruins a guest experience faster than an overflowing tank. We monitored levels and pumped proactively throughout the event.
When small issues came up — a dispenser that needed adjustment, a door that stuck in the cold — our team handled them immediately. Guests never noticed.
After the Event
Teardown brought its own challenges. The crowd dispersed gradually, and we had to work around pedestrians and road closures. We couldn't just pack up and leave — we had to coordinate with event staff and city officials to remove equipment safely.
Every trailer, generator, and light tower came out on schedule. We left the sites clean and clear, ready for the next day's normal activity on the Mall.
